"Just go. Stay in your cloak, and you will see."

The King doubted that his brother-in-law would frequent this dingy, decrepit tavern, but he trusted him, so he found a seat close to the fire.

The fire was hypnotic; he blinked and the place was different. Two young lords entered, bragging of their day's deeds, toasting each other.

The King could not take his gaze from one, a Rider of the Rohirrim, laughing with his friend. Éomer never introduced himself to them, but when he left hours later, he was smiling. He understood why Faramir came to this place.

I know it's been a while, but this piece popped into my head back when I first read ribby's Unexpected Guest. I got the wrong end of the stick when I read it, but I liked my end, so I'm subverting her story to my own ends, to some extent. My tavern, my rules.

Summary: Two drinkers notice something odd going on in the Tavern.

Cross-posted from my journal -- In answer to a query about challenges, seleneheart said

"What shebit and I were thinking is that instead of posting a formal challenge from the mods, that a character could walk into the inn and issue the challenge to the patrons."

So here's a shot at it. This tale has a couple of functions. It is, if they will accept it, a belated birthday present for aprilkat and an extremely belated birthday present for ithiliana. Second, it contains, at the end, a challenge to the denizens of the Five Armies.

I have a question. Are we going to do challenges here at the pub? If so, I have a proposal for consideration. :waves to all:
